Tableau Murder Mystery

Tableau Murder Mystery

The End-User.

Most days, we are all designing for the non-data people. General graphicacy (h/t Alberto Cairo) has improved in recent years due to constant exposure, but there’s still a ways to go. Through human-centered design and use of gestalt principles we can help our users feel comfortable exploring our dashboards, but…

Tools.

We’re bombarded with them. All the time. Everywhere. And different tools require different knowledge about how to navigate them. One of the committees ahead of our Tableau roll out: training. We were sure to include end users in this list. The vast overwhelming majority of users in every business will be read-only viewers. While looking for a great way to introduce Tableau to them, I came across Mark Bradbourne’s Escape Room. Brilliant. What better way to introduce people to something than a game that requires interaction? A similar idea to introduce people to SQL was developed at Northwestern’s Knight Lab - thank you to Ben Jones for sharing! I immediately felt a need to make something in Tableau.

Murder Mystery.

The Tableau Murder Mystery introduces people to using quick filters, filter actions, navigating between tabs, common chart types, and more. I’m hoping this is fun for people and we develop something similar in house. Please enjoy and let me know your thoughts!

Thank Yous.

Massive thanks to Mark Connolly, Michelle Frayman, and Adam Mico for their feedback. Every one of them provided excellent suggestions, in addition to several of my coworkers at Stanford Health Care.
